Their only exposure to English is their four hours weekly at school plus a few extra from other activities.

This is especially true of rural school students, where they are actually heckled by peers when they try speak it outside the classroom.

Unless anyone is smart enough to realise and change this, there will be doubtful improvement even if we REPLACE the entire English teaching workforce with expats.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8549505056788641501.post-67171811600421158692010-06-10T22:16:58.438+08:002010-06-10T22:16:58.438+08:00glad ur finally doing something for the paper

They do not know what they are doing. They are just implementing a policy directive, but no commitment. Six years from now, the teaching of english language will see the same fate as the abandoned teaching of mathematics and science in english.
As rightly pointed out, why hire the English when we have locals to take up the posts. For a start our students will not be able to grasp the english accent. That alone will kill the interest. English language is also a dull subject to most . Apart from that who is to guarantee that the english teachers we will import are qualified and of quality.
My proposal is to go back to teaching mathematics and science in english. Rectify whatever weaknesses there are.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
